First off, Welcome!
~~~~~
Let me be the first to congratulate you on taking the baby steps that are comming to the server, or to this website, and showing an interesting in the daunting world of RP.
In this (absolutely not) short guide, I am going to assume you know the basics of minecraft, speak english, and am not a complete moron. i am also going to assume you have no idea what RP might entail.
One thing to note is that this server is still growing, many ideas are not tested or even yet considered. Feel free to suggest! in my few days here I already have changed the landscape of the game with roads, weapons, enemies and this guide!
~~~~~
The very Basics
~~~~~
RP stands for "Role-Play" essentially, any videogame ever is RP to some extent, even if you are just playing the roll of a mute plumber making his way rightwards across a surreal landscape of turtles and mushrooms.
In this case, it means you are playing a character in our little fantasy world, represented by EvilGrim's RP Adevnture server (Which you may or may not yet have visited)
The easiest way to think of what we do is 'psuedo-survival'. Survival multiplayer does not yet exist, so we fake it to some extent, keeping track of what blocks we destroy and create, and generally having fun. It is minecraft with more purpose than just trying to randomly build, or survive the next wave of lava.
~~~~~
One small step for your avatar, one Giant Leap out of the spawn prison
~~~~~
Alright, so let us say now that you have just been let out of the spawn prison by one of our many freindly and huggable OPs, brighteye'd you wander into the world, where do you start?
Firstly, you must decide your 'class'.
There are currently four classes, think of them as jobs. they govern what you may build, and how you will contribute to the world you now are in.
Just quickly, they are Metalsmith, Stonemason, Woodsman and Herbalist (names may vary).
Metalsmiths can make metals out of ore, and use those metals to make weapons and other things.
Stonemasons can make cobblestone, stairs and gravel out of rock, and can even make glass from sand!
Woodsmen get two 'trunk' blocks from each trunk 'mined', and can turn those trunks into wood they can also farm saplings for wood
Herbalists can make cloth and dyes out of flowers, aswell as heal the wounds of those injured in battle.
There will be more Jobs in time.
Remember; you can only build with the blocks you have mined or been given - because you are a Woodman does not mean you cannot build with cobblestone, but you need to trade with a stonemason to get it. Building with materials you do not have is considered cheating, and is stictly disallowed. It is the only rule we heavily enforce (other than no griefing, obviously), as cheating destroys the community of trading and camaraderie we work to build. (the exception is dirt and stone, which you gain so quickly in such insane quantities that you tend to lose count)
~~~~~
some basics you need to know before reading on
~~~~~
handy commands;
!store and !get
this command confused me for a while, until someone used it and revealed it's nature to me! It is a way to keep track of anything you see fit! simply type "!store Iron 200" for example and an entry will appear saying Iron is set to 200, now, when you type "!get Iron", it will tell you "200".
This can be done with anything at all, and typing "!get" will list the different things you have stored.
For example, you can type "!store Race Elf" and it will store the word "Elf" under the entry "Race"
"!store Weapon Daemon Spear" will produce the entry "Daemon Spear" when you type "!get Weapon"
!me
This is how to emote, ie; do an action. For instance, if you type normally, it appears as "ComradeJohan: I am typing words" but if you type !me types words, it will appear as "*ComradeJohan types words*"
!roll
This is used for combat and probability, we'll go into more detail there later, but it works like so - typing "!roll 1 15" will have the game randomly choose a number between 1 and 15
[brackets]
these are to denote comments your character is not making, but you 'the player' is, most common you might way "[be right back]" to denote that you're going to get some shopping out of the car for your mum or somesuch. or to simply say '[hello everyone]' when comming online. We're not super strict about them, but they help keep things from getting confusing.
Carrying capacity
You can only carry 25 of any recourse, so, if you mine 25 Copper Ore, you'll have to store it somewhere before mining more! Most people store it nearby then make a series of big trips to their main store room. Roads and even Traintracks are being considered to ease this process.
~~~~~
Home is where the Hearth is
~~~~~
So, you've stepped out and decided on your class, now, do somethnig with it! the first thing to do, really, is make somewhere to stay and maybe even ply your trade! this can be as simple as a dirt mound into which you might crawl, or as elaborate as a citadel or fortress. many comunities offer space and buildings free for use and are only too happy for you to move into them to enrich the town.
(Kagura's not-very-humble home)
Once you have a place to hang out, you can think about storing what you mine for barter or construction, storage is important, lest you lose track of what you have. Prettymuch every single player will have a storage somewhere, be it hidden underground or in their homes, or even sitting in barels in their castle courtyard.
There are two popular ways to store.
1. a block, or stack of blocks of any kind with gravel on top of it is multiplied by five (black cloth is used for ore, dont ask me why)
2. a single block with multiple blocks of gravel on top is multiplied by five as many times as there are gravel blocks!
so. 25 gold can be either
a) 25 gold bricks, loose, strewn around
b) 5 gold bricks topped by a single gravel
c) 1 gold brick with two gravel bricks atop it (1x5=5, 5x5 = 25)
I prefer method 1.
(as can be seen a) is not a great method for storage by contrast)
just remember not to make your home with blocks you do not have, so no obsidian towers without going to the considerable lengths to acquire obsidian.
~~~~~
Them's fightin' words
~~~~~
Alright, so by now you're probably wondering how to beat someone to death so you can find me and kill me for making such a redicrously long and rambling guide. that goes into far too much detail and contains far too much useless crap like this very paragraph I just used to waste ten seconds of your life.
-HP-
Firstly, everyone has 20 HP, you can keep track of them in your head, or maybe with the !store command. when you reach 0 HP, you become incapacitated and cannot move or build, but you can still scream yell and flail for someone to help you.
Health is recovered by visiting a herbalist, they can harvest 2 flowers to heal 1 HP. these flowers must be fresh, so no hoarding potions, I'm afraid. A herbalist needs to be around to do this, so be careful.
If you become incapacitated, another player must drag your broken and shattered corpse to the holy place of your choosing. this might be the temple in your town, a sacred grove of trees, or, in my case, a pentagram lava pit under my citadel. Healing thusly restores all your hearts. Dragging is done just by following a player. We will probably make some penalty for being resurrected, but we dont know what yet.
-Attack and Defence-
Attack and defence is handled, as mentioned above somewhere, by a !roll.
As a base, every player has 10 Attack and 10 Defence, but this can be augmented with weapons and shields (and should be, brinigng fists to a swordfight will probably leave your hands wriggling on the floor)
Attack is upgraded by making or purchasing weapons, at the moment, the premier source of weapons is Kagura the Daemon (me!) who sells them from his shoppe.
One-handed weapons add +2 to your attack
Two-handed weapons add +4 to your attack
Not only that, but the material of the weapon denotes it's quality (and cost), and further helps the matter.
+1 for Copper (or bronze, as i like to call it)
+2 for Iron
+3 for Silver
That might not be the end of it thuogh, some weapons give further bonuses, like the Iron Morning Star from Kagura's Shoppe, it adds a further +1 for a total of +5! (one hand +2, Iron +2, Morning star +1) this equals an attack of 15, which is much better than the base of 10, and for a relatively easy price. you would be a fool not to arm yourself at least with a Bronze weapon!
Defence is augmented like attack, but with shields.
+1 for wood
+2 for Copper
+3 for Iron
+4 for Silver
Obviously you cannot use a shield and a two handed weapon.
It should be noted that enchanted weapons do exist, and can be made for a hefty price. We currently have no rules as to how much stuff these things should cost to make, and how it should work. but as long as you suggest it on the forum and it is not ludicrous, it will almost certainly be allowed. We are nice.
-fighting itself-
So, you know what atack and defence mean, now, how to use them. it is a simple but elegant system.
First off, the attacker rolls - who is the attacker? well, if you get jumped by a brigand, they would be the attacker, since they have the element of surprise, if you are engaging in an honorable battle, you might like to roll for it, or otherwise decide - The attacker rolls with his attack roll, affected by his weapon. Then, the defender rolls, his roll modified by his shield. The amount the attacker wins by is the amount of damage applpied, if the defender wins, the defender becomes the attacker. Defender always wins ties.
Example.
Kagura is attacking Kaboomarang because Kaboomarang keeps comming into his shop and hopping the counter.
Kagura is armed with a Deamon Spear, this malignant weapon adds +4 to his attack aswell as the +4 for being two-handed, giving him a fearsome 18 attack roll. Having a two-handed weapon, he has no shield, defence is 10
Kaboomarang is armed with a Brnaze (copper) longsword, a simple one hand weapon. +1 for Copper, +2 for one hand. He has no shield, because he is too silly to buy one. Defense is also 10
Kagura Rolls 16 for his initial attack, Kaboom has no possible chance to defend against that, since his defence is only 10, still, he must roll to see how much of that damage he can avoid, he rolls a lucky 10.
16 - 10 = 6. Thus Kaboom takes 6 Damage and is now on 14 health.
Kagura attacks again, rolling a paltry 3, Kaboom rolls 4, which is sufficient for him to attack.
Since Kaboom defended successfully, he rolls to attack now, with his bronze longsword, he gets to roll up to thirteen (!roll 1 13) he gets an 8. Kagura, now defensive, has no shield, and has only 10 defenc, he rolls a 6. Kagura takes two damage and is on 18 HP.
This would continue until the battle is over either by mutual agreement, of by someone getting incapacitated, given Kagura's vastly supirior weapon, Kaboomarang is almost certainly going to have his knees broken.
Future thought
~~~~~
They are the basics, fleshed out and filled with mroe words than needed. the next step is, if you feel you'd like to keep playing with us and make a name in our little land, is to make a character proper by posting in the "Character Profiles" segment of the site. Joiiin usssss...
~~~~~
NPCs
~~~~~
At present the only NPCs we have are the deadly Nightcrawlers, but more will be added to the bestiary. Since they are just a collection of blocks, not intelligent Monster things like in survival, they're not going to chase you or anything. It is up to you and the other players to move them and react to them and roll for them.
~~~~~
in closing
~~~~~
This is quite intentional, the only numbers in this RP are in counting your riches and in attack/defence, the rest is up to your imagination!, do not be afraid to assume the role of a goblin lurking on the path or even one of the nightcrawlers! Just keep evertything civil, keep an open mind and HAVE FUN.
We will add much more as time goes, more monsters, armor and more rules as issues and concerns arise, we add things as we see fit and as they become neccecary, do not be afraid to make suggestions to us, in game or here on this forum.
Further, do not be afraid to ask questions, I have definately left things out or fergotten them in this guide, so please, ask away!
